Screen Time Without the Fight: A Realistic Framework for Real Families
Screen time isn't a number — it's a transition problem. Here's a framework that ends the daily fight.
Why minute-counting fails
Most screen-time fights aren't about the screen — they're about the transition off the screen. Dopamine doesn't track minutes; it tracks endings.
The container approach
Instead of minutes, define containers: when, where, and what ends it. A predictable end ('after this episode' or 'when the timer beeps') is far easier to leave than an arbitrary one.
Soft landings
Plan the next 10 minutes after a screen ends. Boredom right after dopamine = meltdown. Movement, food, or co-regulation right after = smooth.
