Highly Sensitive Children — frequently asked
What is a highly sensitive child (HSC)?+
An HSC is a child with a nervous system that processes sensory and emotional input more deeply than peers. Around 15–20% of children meet the profile. It's a temperament, not a disorder.
Is being highly sensitive the same as being autistic?+
No. There can be overlap, but high sensitivity is a temperament that occurs across neurotypes. Many HSCs are not autistic, and many autistic children are not classically HSC.
Should I 'toughen up' my sensitive child?+
No. Sensitivity is a strength when supported and a wound when shamed. Lower the load, validate the experience, and build skills slowly.
