Calm Parenting Guide
How to Handle Toddler Tantrums Calmly
Toddler tantrums are developmentally normal.
Toddlers have:
- Immature brains
- Limited emotional regulation
- Limited communication skills
- Intense emotions
- Low frustration tolerance
Tantrums are often signs of overwhelm, not manipulation.
What Makes Tantrums Worse
- Yelling
- Threats
- Punishments
- Shaming
- Overstimulating environments
What Helps During Tantrums
- Stay calm. Your calm nervous system helps regulate theirs.
- Keep language simple. Too many words overwhelm dysregulated toddlers.
- Validate feelings. “You’re really upset right now.”
- Hold boundaries calmly. Validation does not mean giving in.
- Focus on safety. Protect, regulate, and reconnect.
Tantrums Are Temporary
Children learn emotional regulation through co-regulation with calm adults.
